The Kuala Lumpur International Photo Awards (KLPA) is an annual portrait photography competition open to all photographers from around the world. Initiated in 2009, and now in its 6th consecutive year, KLPA is regarded as the major platform in the region for portrait photographers of all levels competing and showcasing their works amongst an international audience.
What is the perfect portrait that will make you cry, smile, laugh out loud, shock or trouble your senses? How is beauty assessed in the world of portrait photography?
In 2014, judges will be guided by the overall guiding philosophy of LOOK AT ME, and are required to seek the best images that will attempt to answer these questions and more, with an emphasis of the existentialist ’self’, the ’me’ in the portrait - the experiencer, an object of consciousness portrayed.
With two open and one themed categories, they will also be selecting entries which show fresh takes, creativity, humour and that unquantifiable ’X’ factor.
• Individual Portraits (Open theme)
• Individual Portraits (Themed ’Savage and Serene’)
• Photo-stories (Storytelling with portraiture-led multimedia or slideshow)
Portrait may be interpreted in its widest sense, in relation to ’photography concerned with portraying people with emphasis on their identity as individuals in relation to their surroundings, status and humanity’.
All photographs must have been taken in 2013 and 2014 or part of an on-going project. Basic darkroom techniques e.g. levels, curves, dodging, burning, minimal sharpening, colour correction are permissible. Photographs can be Black and White or Colour, in any format. Entrants may enter one, two or all categories if they wish, separately.
The Photographer retains the copyright of all submitted images at all times.
Entry fee:
• Portrait Single category: USD$12.50 per image
• Portrait Themed category: USD$12.50 per image
• Photo-Stories category: USD$55.00 per series
Eligibility
The competition is open to all amateur and professional photographers from all around the world. All contestants must be at least 16 years at 30 April 2014.
Prize
The top 3 award winners from each category will receive:
• 1st Prize: USD$3,500 + Trophy + Pacsafe Camsafe Product
• 2nd Prize: USD$1,500 + Pacsafe Camsafe Product
• 3rd Prize: USD$750 + Pacsafe Camsafe Product
All prize-winners will be invited to attend the Awards Presentation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August 2014. A travel allowance will be provided for overseas attendees only.
Moreover, to encourage and nurture a future generation of local photographers, three selected Malaysian photographers will be awarded RM1,000, RM750 and RM500 by the judges from all three categories.
